A Collaborative Approach

Swarm Intelligence is an electrical engineering firm based in Christchurch, New Zealand. In biology, swarm intelligence describes  the "collective behaviour of decentralised, self-organised systems that we see in nature". Think of a flash of silver that ripples with seamless ease through the ocean when a school of fish change direction or the collective intelligence of  flock birds as they weave and dive in choreographed murmuration. The engineers at Swarm Intelligence apply a similar principle to the projects they work on harnessing the shared power of collective experience. Their philosophy is one of collective thought, "so that when your plant or electrical system is maintained by us, you are not just benefiting from the knowledge of the person on site, but from the knowledge of the group behind that person when they come back to the Hive".

It was only meant to be a six week project, but it lasted for two years. The engagement and results speak for themselves, with a number of city's most difficult to reach rough sleepers now housed. Most the 'kaewa' or 'wanderers' have been living on the streets for years and struggle with multiple issues including addiction and mental health problems. Housing First- Otautahi sit up the commons project during covid so the homeless would have somewhere to gather during the lock down. The result was a shared meeting place in the central city, where those needing help could connect with those providing help, but on their on terms. The gatherings only last for a few hours each week, but that's all it takes to build trust and deepen relationships.
